Last year, for example, the Cure Lounge on Tremont Street paid a $30,000 settlement after club managers shut the club during a party organized by a group of black Harvard graduates following the Harvard-Yale football game. Apparently, managers felt that the Ivy Leaguers waiting in line were attracting the attention of gang members.
Boston promoter Bruno Cesar has been planning parties and social events here for more than 15 years. Club managers quiz him endlessly on the type of music to be played and the type of crowd it is likely to attract. That’s not the case in New York, Miami, or other cities where his events draw integrated crowds, said Cesar.
“Why can’t people in Boston just go to a club and have fun?’’ he asked. Maybe scientists will get around to that one after figuring out when the next Ice Age begins. Nightclub apartheid in Boston probably involves some level of self-segregation. But short-sighted public policies contribute to the problem by maximizing the potential for trouble. The mandatory 2 a.m. closing time for Boston bars, for example, forces patrons to spill out simultaneously from densely concentrated club areas in the Theatre District and Faneuil Hall. Later closing hours or staggered closings would help to thin out the crowds and reduce fears about mayhem during the so-called “let-out.’’
None of this, however, would explain why an up-and-coming event planner like Daniella Twin Gutierrez, who’s known for creating fancy 1930s theme parties such as Harlem Nights, has trouble renting downtown club venues. She said it leaves her little choice but to look out of town or rent expensive hotel ballrooms, cutting deeply into profits.
A lot of people appreciate a wide range of music and take pleasure in socializing in mixed settings. But asked to identify night spots in Boston that feel truly inclusive, event planners could only name a few jazz venues and Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen in the South End. Style setters in Boston mostly pointed across the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge to Cambridge. That’s where they go to relax on their nights off.
On Tuesday night, several Boston producers and event planners were gathered in the Middlesex Lounge near Central Square to hear popular DJs Moe D and Serge A spin records for an integrated crowd that included college students, hip-hop enthusiasts, retro disco fans, assorted hipsters, and a British soldier on leave thrown in for good measure.
“You’ll never see this in Boston,’’ said Bob Diesel, who has worked the Boston party scene as a DJ, musician, and event planner for decades. And tension-free, no less. A brawny bouncer, who usually works in downtown Boston, said manning the door in Cambridge is “like a night off.” Maybe it’s not entirely fair to compare the club scene in a cozy city like Cambridge to night spots in the state capital. But it is fair to ask why a city the size of Boston doesn’t produce more nightspots that capture the eclectic spirit of clubs in Cambridge.
City officials in Boston recently turned to experts at the Cambridge Innovation Center for help in creating and operating what is described as an “entrepreneurial ecosystem’’ for start-up businesses in Boston’s Seaport District. Maybe the city’s leaders could tap Cambridge experts for a little advice on how to loosen up and have fun, too.
